We are building this section of our website to have as much information on chemotherapy as we can to be useful to both cancer patients and their friends and loved ones.

We have articles describing what chemotherapy treatment is, the type of chemo, different ways it is used for treatment, chemo side effects..and a lot more.

What is not included here are many personal stories of chemotherapy experiences. You can find these in our cancer blogs section.

If you haven't got the time now to delve into our articles, below are some short answers to some general questions about chemo (for more in-depth responses, please check out the appropriate articles below when you are ready).

FAQ

What is chemotherapy treatment?

Chemotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses drugs to kill cancer cells. The drugs can be taken orally or injected into a vein and travel throughout the body to reach and kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy can be used alone or in combination with other treatments, such as radiation therapy or surgery, to achieve the best outcome.

What days are you most vulnerable after chemo?

Days 7-10 after chemotherapy are typically when patients experience the lowest blood cell counts and are most vulnerable to infection and other complications. However, the specific timing can vary depending on the type and dose of chemotherapy and the individual patient's response to treatment plan.

How many rounds of chemo is normal?

The number of rounds of chemotherapy a patient receives can vary depending on many factors, including the type and stage of cancer, the patient's overall health, and response to treatment. Some patients may only need one or two rounds of chemotherapy, while others may require several rounds over several months or longer. The treatment plan is individualized and determined by the patient's healthcare team based on the patient's specific needs and circumstances.

What is intravenous chemotherapy?

Intravenous (IV) chemotherapy is the most common type of chemotherapy and it is where drugs are delivered directly into a vein through an IV line. The drugs then circulate throughout the body to reach and destroy cancer cells. IV chemotherapy can be given in a hospital, outpatient clinic, or at home with a portable pump. This method of delivery allows for a more controlled and consistent dose of the drugs compared to oral chemotherapy. The specific treatment plan and schedule will vary based on the type and stage of cancer and the patient's overall health.

What is palliative chemotherapy?

Palliative chemotherapy is a type of treatment that is given to relieve symptoms and improve the quality of life for people with advanced-stage cancer that can't be cured. The goal of palliative chemotherapy is to shrink tumors, slow down cancer growth, and reduce symptoms such as pain, discomfort, or difficulty breathing. Unlike curative chemotherapy, which is intended to cure cancer, palliative chemotherapy is not intended to cure cancer but rather to improve the patient's quality of life. It is often used in conjunction with other palliative treatments, such as radiation therapy or pain management.
