For CCP Editors: A Step-by-Step Guide

Follow this guide to ensure each article is edited, formatted, and published properly on WordPress.

Pre-upload Check

  • Read the article thoroughly.
  • Perform basic grammar and clarity edits.
  • Ensure logical flow and factual accuracy.
  • Break long paragraphs into smaller, readable ones.
  • Add headings throughout the article if the author has not provided them.
  • Make sure the article complies with our guidelines.

Step 1: Uploading & Formatting the Post

  1. Log in to WordPress.
  2. Navigate to Posts → Add New.
  3. Paste the article title in Title Case into the title field.
  4. Click the Toggle Block Inserter ( + ) on the left.
  5. Search for and add the Table of Contents block.
  6. Copy and paste the article body below it.
  7. Highlight each heading → click the paragraph button → select Heading (H2).
  8. For subheadings under a heading, use Heading (H3).
  9. Click Save Draft.

 Step 2: Author Box & Related Posts

  1. At the end of the article, on a new line, type within square brackets [ ] → simple-author-box
  2. Below it, write→ Edited by: Your Name → link your LinkedIn to your name (Follow the same for the senior editor's name).
  3. Scroll to the Related Posts section → add 5–7 relevant articles.
  4. Scroll to Alternative Title section → use ChatGPT to generate and insert 3 alternative titles.
  5. Click Save Draft.

 Step 3: Metadata & SEO

  1. Click on the Post tab (right panel).
  2. Click Excerpt → use ChatGPT to generate an excerpt in Title Case.
  3. Add the author’s full name in the Author section.
  4. Choose the appropriate categories and tags (minimum 2 to 3 categories and 5 tags) (list of tags provided at the end of the guide).
  5. Do not add new categories or tags. Please check with Shara if a new one is needed.
  6. For categories, always choose the option ‘Talking about cancer’. The article should also fall under one or more of the following categories: ‘I have cancer’, ‘I have a friend with cancer’, ‘Personal experience’, or ‘Current cancer research’. Choose any guides if possible.
  7. Click the Rank Math tab:
    • Open Edit Snippet.
    • Insert the new article title, the one generated by ChatGPT.
    • Use ChatGPT to generate an SEO-friendly permalink for factual articles.
    • Check the permalink for duplication.
    • Use ChatGPT to generate a meta description in Title Case.
  8. Click Save Draft.

Step 4: Linking Content

  1. Add 2–3 internal links:
    • Highlight relevant words/sentences → press Ctrl+K → add link.
  2. Add 4–5 external links (e.g., NHS, Cancer Research UK):
    • Link to reliable sources.
    • Highlight relevant words/sentences → press Ctrl+K → add link.
    • Click on the edit button.
    • Select “Open in new tab”.
  3. Link to relevant CCP LinkedIn newsletter articles if available. (https://www.linkedin.com/newsletters/cancer-care-matters-7239537659684007938/| https://www.linkedin.com/newsletters/science-cancer-stem-and-me-7239533528839827456/)
  4. Click Save Draft.

Step 5: Visuals & Publishing

  1. Request the senior editor for a thumbnail image and 2 internal images.
  2. Provide image suggestions based on the article context to the senior editor.
  3. Receive the images from the senior editor.
  4. Go to the Post tab → click Set Featured Image → upload the thumbnail → add the title of the article.
  5. To insert internal images:
    • Place the cursor where the image should appear → click the Toggle Block Inserter (+) on the left.
    • Search for image → click on media library → select upload image.
    • Add the title and the ALT txt (both should be the image’s title and not the article’s title)
    • Align it to the centre.
  6. Click Save Draft.
  7. Preview the article → make final edits.
  8. Click Publish.

After Publishing

  1. Email the author with the article link → thank them and encourage future collaboration. Please share on your socials as well, if possible (email template provided at the end of the guide).
  2. Update the Excel sheet with all necessary details.
